SOUTH PORTLAND — Drivers traveling through South Portland should expect increased patrols and sobriety checkpoints between Friday, Aug. 21 and Sunday, Aug. 23.

The increased enforcement of Maine’s drunk driving laws during the summer months is a result of grant funding for the city from the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety.

Maine’s drunk driving laws prohibit anyone whose blood alcohol level exceeds .08 percent from driving.

An operating under the influence conviction may result in $7,000 in expenses, fines, towing charges, attorney fees and insurance increases, according to South Portland police. Officers this year have already investigated 25 alcohol related collisions and have arrested 92 offenders in South Portland.
