A Steep Falls woman was pronounced dead at the scene Monday afternoon after her car rolled over in a single-car crash on Route 25 in West Gorham.

Gorham Police Sgt. Dan Young said Deborah Willette, 54, of Steep Falls was traveling westbound toward Standish when her 1998 Dodge Caravan crossed the highway centerline and the eastbound lane. Police said her car hit a utility pole and she was thrown from the car. The car rolled over on top of her, Young said.

The accident happened near the Little Ducklings day care on Ossipee Trail (Route 25). Lisa Cobb, owner of the day care, heard the car hit the utility pole.

“I saw just the tail end of the car and there was a big cloud of dust and dirt,” Cobb said.

“She did a cartwheel into the woods,” Cobb said.

A day care employee called 911.

Police said Gorham rescue personnel utilized heavy duty balloons to lift the car off the victim.

Tow truck operator John Dumbrocyo of Dumbo Enterprises said the victim’s sneakers were in the woods.

Police believe a decayed tree that had fallen into the road could have been a factor and she was “sucked” off the road trying to avoid it.

Lt. Chris Sanborn of Gorham police said there was no indication that alcohol or speed were factors “based on what witnesses told us.” Police also ruled out cell phone use as a factor. The speed limit on that section of Route 25 is 50 miles per hour.

Sgt. Robert Mailman is reconstructing the accident, which closed the highway from Dingley Spring Road to the Standish line.
