A convicted sex offender was arrested on a warrant charge Monday for failure to register with the state.
Stephen Morelli, 59, was convicted of unlawful sexual contact in 1986 and 1991 and also has a conviction for furnishing liquor to a minor. Police said he has been wanted for more than two years for failing to register with the Maine State Police as a sex offender, which he’s required to do for the rest of his life.
Police arrested Morelli, a transient, while conducting surveillance at Saccarappa Park on Main Street, where there had been reports of men drinking in public.
Morelli was taken to Cumberland County Jail Monday and was released the same day after making the $500 cash bail himself.
