Two recent accidents, and numerous complaints, lead to enforcement changes.
After two accidents and numerous complaints from residents regarding a stretch of road in Standish, Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office officials said today they will ratchet up traffic enforcement in the area around Blake Road, Buck Street and Ossipee Trail.
On July 23 at around 11 p.m., deputies responded to a serious motor vehicle accident near 113 Blake Road, officials said. A pickup truck operated by Travis Rony, 24, had gone off the road and into a utility pole, which was lying on top of the vehicle. Rony, who was detained by an off-duty Maine State Trooper who happened to be in the area, was charged with operating under the influence and released.
It was the same location as a similar accident that the Sheriff’s Office handled on July 10. In that case, a male passenger was hurt and the female driver, Danielle Walker, 24, was charged with operating under the influence.
In addition to the two accidents, the Sheriff’s Office said it had received numerous complaints about reckless driving in the area.
“We are having a lot of problems up in that area,” said Capt. Jeff Davis.
There is a bar near the largely residential area, which can be a dangerous mix, especially when patrons leaving a bar want to stay off busy main roads, he said.
“In my opinion, they are just going out the back way, trying to get avoid Route 25,” said Davis. “We are going to be paying closer attention to that area.”
