The Scarborough Public Library’s 2009 Summer Reading Program is all about self-expression. Teens who love art, poetry, science and cartooning will find it’s all happening at the Library.

Teens are invited to be teen book reviewers, submit ideas for new inventions, and solve the library’s weekly reference question.

Special art and writing programs will include an art workshop for grades 5-9 on Wednesday, July 8, at 6 p.m. Elizabeth Forrest will lead teens in creating jewelry using recycled materials and pieces of old jewelry. Paul Puiia will show teens how to construct wallets using duct tape to create their own unique designs.

Teens who are into writing poetry won’t want to miss the poetry workshop conducted by published poet and educator Bruce Spang. This writing workshop for grades 6-12 will be offered on Wednesday, July 15, from 1-5 p.m., and will culminate with a poetry reading for the public at 6 p.m. Teens will be treated to pizza before the reading.

On Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 4 p.m., artist and cartoonist Jake Paris will offer a cartooning workshop for grades 5-8. Teens will learn illustration techniques for drawing faces, figures, backgrounds and settings, as well as basic comic strip conventions.

All programs are free and open to the public.
