The Bonny Eagle High boys outdoor track team brought home its first state championship in 45 years this past spring season, so it’s no surprise that the Scots were well represented on the SMAA all-star teams that were recently released.
Named to the first team from Bonny Eagle were Christian Malarsie (1,600-meter race walk), Jamie Ruginski (400 dash, 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, triple jump) and the 4 x 400 relay team of Cody Marean, Nick Winslow, Joey Collins and Ruginski.
The Scots weren’t the only locals to receive first team honors, however. Windham’s Patrick Ciez also did in the high jump.
The second team included Winslow (110 hurdles), Ruginski (long jump), Bonny Eagle’s Nate Doehler (javelin) and Windham’s Eric O’Connor (pole vault). Ciez received honorable mention in both the long jump and triple jump.
The SMAA girls outdoor track all-stars included Windham’s Katie Cook on the first team in the pole vault. Emily Durgin of Bonny Eagle was named to the second team in both the 1,600 run and the 3,200 run. Receiving honorable mention for the Scots were Morgan Costa (100 dash) and Peyton Dostie (100 hurdles).
Softball all-stars
A number of local athletes were also recognized for their accomplishments on the softball diamond. Named to the SMAA softball first team were Bonny Eagle’s Hannah Goodale (pitcher), Stefanie Stockwell (outfield) and Messina Provencher (catcher). Windham shortstop Riley Graves was named to the second team. Windham’s Helen Libby and Bonny Eagle’s Jordan VanRosendael received honorable mention.
The Scots were also well represented on the all-academic team. Bonny Eagle’s Aimee Bradbury, Kelly Bradbury, Provencher, Dani Roma, Stockwell, VanRosendael and Ashley Weeman were named academic all-stars.
Baseball all-stars
Bonny Eagle senior second baseman Tim Grovo was named to the All-SMAA baseball second team. Grovo hit .400 with two triples in the regular season for the Scots. Windham junior catcher Collin Mello was also selected to the second team. He hit .420 with three doubles, three triples and eight RBI for the Eagles.
Girls lacrosse all-stars
The SMAA girls lacrosse first team all-stars included Bonny Eagle’s Becky King (midfield) and Kate Boyer (attack), as well as Windham’s Kelsey McGowan (defense). Bonny Eagle’s Katie Kohler and Windham’s Samantha Gifford were named to the all-rookie team. Named to the all-sportsmanship team were Bonny Eagle’s Stephanie Lombardo and Windham’s Kassie Reutlinger.
Boys lacrosse all-stars
Three Scots were named to the All-SMAA second team in boys lacrosse: seniors Zach Litif (attack), Wade Severance (midfield) and Jessie Harmon (defense). Windham senior Jacob Greenwood was also named to the second team on defense.
Windham first-year coach Chris Shorr was named SMAA Coach of the Year in boys lacrosse. Shorr guided the Eagles to a 5-7 record in their first year playing at the varsity level.
