CHICAGO — Two state championships in a single season is enough to make any resumé look good, and Kennebunk freshman Abbey Leondardi’s resumé is littered with accolades.
Add another to the list. The sensational distance runner was named the Gatorade Maine Girls Track and Field Athelte of the Year, it was announced on Wednesday.
Leonardi, who was named Gatorade’s Cross Country Runner of the Year for the state this fall, won the both the 800 and 1600-meter runs at the Class A state meet two weeks ago. Additionally, she ran the fastest 3200 time in the state this year in winning the event at the York County Championship last month and was third at the New England championships in the 1600 this past weekend.
“Her workouts are unbelievable as a freshman,” Rams coach Ron Hankel said in the release. “If you build a race plan for her, she will follow it. It’s just incredible.”
