WELLS — Having raised the only blemish on Cape Elizabeth’s otherwise perfect mark, Wells had hopes of repeating the feat in Monday’s rematch.
Such was not to be, however, as the Capers swatted 14 hits while dealing Wells a 6-0 thumping in an WMC softball tilt.
Hurling her second shutout of the day, Cape’s Tricia Thibodeau held the Warriors (10-6) to just two singles, one each by Noelle Sarno and Meaghan Lewia.
Their only other two runners reached on infield errors.
“They just outplayed us,” said Wells coach Kevin Fox. “They wanted it more.”
If so, it might have been to pay the Warriors back for the 3-1 loss they hung on the Capers at home back on May 8.
Or it might have been to cap off a fulfilling day for Cape that began with a 14-0 thrashing of Falmouth in a rain out make-up tilt.
In any event, to clear a Caper hurdle in the playoffs, Wells will likely find a more elevated crossbar.
“They’re a great team,” said Fox, “and that is a bar that’s been set. We hung with them for a while, but we hung a couple over the plate and they got into it.”
The one pitch that hung the longest was Wells pitcher McKenzie Burke’s first offering of the fourth inning.
Thibodeau crushed it, sending it over the fence in center field to add to what had been Cape’s 1-0 lead.
Burke escaped further trouble in that frame, after slipping out of a bases-loaded jam.
Wells had a chance to reply in the bottom of the inning, after Lewia spanked an infield single, and later hustled to third on Sarah Quint’s sacrifice bunt.
But Lewia was left stranded when Thibodeau retired the next two Warriors.
Next inning, Cape increased its lead to 3-0 when catcher Colleen Martin lined a solo shot over the right-field fence.
Wells was unable to muster any further scoring threats against Thibodeau, who fanned a total of 10 Warriors.
The Capers put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh with three more runs.
“They hit the ball well, today,” said Fox. “We played and competed, but came up on the short end.”
The playoff-bound Warriors will wrap up the regular season, Wednesday, at home against Traip Academy.
