The Lake Region boys and girls track teams took part in the “Tri-County Clash” meet with Fryeburg Academy, Sacopee Valley and Waynflete at Lake Region High on May 22. The boys came in third overall with 61 points and the girls were second overall with 75.5.

The Lakers’ Zach Tomkinson won the discus with a personal-best throw of 114-2. Matt Van Vliet had a strong performance in the jumping events for the Lakers, winning the high jump with a personal-best jump of 6 feet even. He also won the long jump with a personal-best 19-1 feet and took the triple jump with another personal-best performance of 40-5.5 feet. The Lakers also got personal bests in the jumping events from Tristan Lacey (second in the high jump at 5-8) and Tom Jamison (fourth in the high jump at 5-4).

On the girls side, the Lakers swept the top three spots in the 100-meter hurdles, with Kari Cowperthwaite winning the event in 17.3 seconds. Close behind her was teammate Doe Leckie, who finished in 17.5 seconds and Betsy Balchunas was third, finishing in 17.9 seconds.

Cowperthwaite and Leckie also teamed up with Samantha Dole and Alyssa Curtis to win the 4×100 meter relay in 55.6 seconds.

The Laker girls also had success in the throwing events. Lauren D’Ascanio won the shot put with a top throw of 35-1.5, a Lake Region High School record, and teammate Shelly Burgess was third with a throw of 29-10. Betsy Balchunas won the individual title in the discus with a top throw of 101-2.
