Naples Recreation Swimming Lessons
June 6 is the day to sign up your 3 year old for swimming lessons sponsored by Naples Recreation. Moms in the know hail these lessons as the social event of the season for the little ones. Each day, kids get to swim, moms get to chat, and after lessons, there is lots of time for playing with fellow swimmers and snacking! There are two sessions, each consisting of daily lessons during the three weeks. The first session is July 6-24, the second is July 27-Aug. 14. Sign ups will run from 9 a.m.-noon on June 6, on a first-come, first-served basis. Lessons run $35 for a single Naples child, $60 for siblings. Non-residents can expect to pay $45 single/$80 siblings. Please contact Harvey Price for more information at 693-6364.
Attention Animal Lovers:
Don’t miss the annual Vest-a-Dog Chinese Auction held at the Naples Town Gym on Saturday, May 30. Doors open at 4 p.m., with drawings at 6 p.m. If you’d like to help the event’s organizer, Sandy Chapman, with the event, please contact her at 693-7935. Of course, donations of new items will also still be accepted. The event is in its seventh year. Last year, Chapman raised enough money to vest three dogs!
Business and Golf do mix!
Like to Golf and own a business? Plan on participating on what’s sure to be a great day at the Sebago Lake Region Chamber’s Ninth Annual Golf Open at our own Naples Golf and Country Club. The staff over at the golf club has been working hard to make the course and newly refurbished restaurant are better than ever. Why not sign up and support the Chamber’s endeavors and a local business all in one shot! Sponsorship and sign up information can be found by calling the Chamber at 892-8265.
Watson’s Wheels and Water Time
Sponsored by the Naples Historical Society, this has long been a great thing to do Father’s Day Weekend. Car and boat buffs alike are in their glory as they check out the old cars, trucks, tractors, boats, steamboats, and engines this show displays. Check it out for yourself Saturday, June 13, right here in Naples. The traditionally delicious chicken barbecue by the Sebago Lions starts at 4:30 p.m. For more information, call 693-6879.
Bargains
I just love a good flea market. They are great because you kill two birds with one stone: get great deals and do your part to prevent landfill overflow by buying items. Two sales of note are the upcoming Harvey’s 2nd Annual Flea Market to benefit Harvest Hills Animal Shelter and the Bridgton Community Center’s ongoing summer flea market. Harvey’s sale (935-4358, ext. 21), on June 13 from 8-3 p.m. promises to offer lots of great items for sale, a food booth and even antique appraisals form 8-noon and 1-3 p.m. You can also rent your own space ($15) at the sale ($25 if you need a table too). The community center’s sale goes through Sept. 5. It will be held each Saturday (since Saturdays are made for yard sales/flea markets) from 9-1 p.m. at the community center at 15 Depot St. Call 647-3116 for space/table rental or for more information.
School vote
Voters came out in support of the SAD 61’s Budget and approved the “re-purposing” of Crooked River. Having attended several of those meetings I feel the vote went the right way. Thanks for all who voted, either way. It is important to just get out their and let you voice be heard. On the same note, I want to congratulate all who ran for any type of office. The fact that the candidates were civic minded enough to want to volunteer their time to our community is enough to make them all winners.
Women’s health fair
If you read this column, you know that I am interested in anything that furthers the issue of people’s health. Having attended Bridgton Hospital’s Free event promoting Women’s Health, I can tell you that it is first rate and not to be missed. The event is Saturday, June 6 from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. The highlight for me this year is the free private breast and skin exam, but there is so much more offered! Spa services, like chair massages, hand scrubs and mini manicures; nutrition information; osteoporosis screenings and much more. Contact Pam Smith at 647-6055 for more information.
Support relay team
The Crooked River Elementary School is once more fielding a team in the American Cancer Society’s Oxford Hills Relay for Life on May 29-30. Last year this team was the top fundraiser at the Relay raising more than $6,000. The team could use some more support in its efforts. Contact Team Captain Alison Caulfield at 693-3348 to lend a hand or make a donation.
