Veteran news

Veterans seeking employment will be able to find help and support at a June 12 job fair at the Windham Veterans Center.

On that date, two veteran representatives from the state Department of Labor’s Portland CareerCenter, Rick Thornton and Don Verrill, will be available to address the needs of all veterans seeking employment.

Members from the Windham Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10643 and the Windham American Legion Post 148 will also be on hand for the same purpose.

They are inviting large and small businesses to send representation also, and spend some time and energy with job-seeking veterans. Even if employers cannot immediately employ anyone, they may meet some great potential future hires.

Recently returning veterans have not generally taken advantage of Portland CareerCenter services. The center encourages all veterans to attend this 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. event.

Veterans will receive tips on interviewing, job search assistance, help with career decisions, and referrals to appropriate veteran services.

The VFW and AL posts are waiving the fee for using the function hall. They have a limited number of tables. Employers interested in participating in this Veterans Fair should contact either Rick Thornton or Don Verrill at the Portland CareerCenter, 347-3244 or 347-3252, or 877-594-5627, TTY 207-817-7113, or e-mail donald.w.verrill@maine.gov or ricky.a.thornton@maine.gov.
