Voters in the five School Administrative District 6 towns have passed a $42.8 million school budget in a referendum in the five district towns Tuesday.

In Buxton, voters approved the school budget 110-80 in a low voter turnout. Town Clerk John Myers reported that 190 people, or 3 percent of the towns’ 6,284 registered voters, cast ballots,

The district’s five towns are Frye Island, Hollis, Limington, Standish and Buxton. Buxton taxpayers will pay 25.8 percent, or nearly $5 million, as its share of the school budget. Buxton’s share dropped by $182,000, a 3 percent decrease from a year ago.

Superintendent Suzanne Lukas said at last week’s district budget meeting, in which voters gave initial approval, that the total local share, $19.1 million, is identical to last year’s budget.

Lukas said there is a reduction of seven positions through attrition but there were no forced layoffs.

The overall total, $42.8 million, rose from last year’s $40.2 million because of debt incurred with the new elementary school under construction in Buxton Center.

Lukas said at last week’s meeting at Bonny Eagle Middle School the budget process began in October. “A difficult budget year,” Lukas said.
