In late March, the Cumberland County Jail held an alternative sentencing program at the Gray/New Gloucester High and Middle Schools. Thirty-three inmates, who otherwise would have served 72 hours in jail for an OUI conviction, chose to take part in the 48-hour program.
The inmates performed more than 520 hours of work throughout the weekend, including painting hallways, stairwells and the gymnasium in both schools. General cleaning of other areas was also completed. The estimated total savings for the school department was approximately $5,500.
