Nonprofit agencies that serve low-income children this summer may be able to receive federal funding to provide meals and snacks under the Maine Department of Education’s Summer Food Service Program.
The program provides money to feed children at schools, churches, playgrounds and parks. It was created to fill the gap when school meals are not available. Last year Maine reached only 16 percent of the eligible children.
Eligible sponsors include public or nonprofit private schools, residential camps, and local, county or state government sites. Also, private nonprofit organizations may apply.
If your organization is interested, contact Gail Lombardi at 207-624-6876 or gail.lombardi@maine.gov by May 1, or visit the department’s Web page for more information at www.maine.gov/education/sfs/sfsp.htm.
