The Bridgton Public Works Department will have to do with one fewer plow truck for part of the winter, after a crash with a tractor-trailer truck left one totaled.
The driver of the plow truck, Cory Fitch, was taken to Bridgton Hospital with a sprained wrist after Monday’s collision. No one else was injured, but Route 302 was closed for seven hours for the cleanup, according to Public Works Director Jim Kidder.
Kidder said the plow got stuck under the ice, causing the truck to veer into oncoming traffic and strike a tractor trailer truck coming in the opposite direction.
“It literally threw the truck into oncoming traffic,” Kidder said Tuesday.
The tractor trailer truck, owned by a Canadian company, was damaged and leaking fluids, Kidder said, and had to be towed away. The driver was uninjured.
Though the plow truck is covered by insurance, Kidder wasn’t sure how long it would take to replace it. With eight plow routes, Kidder said it’s difficult this time of year to do without one of the fleet.
“The unfortunate thing was the truck was totaled,” Kidder said, adding that the driver was very lucky he had his seat belt on.
