A 15-year-old boy was rescued by Westbrook police after falling into the Presumpscot River Monday evening.

The teenager, who is not being identified, fell through ice into the river. Acting Sgt. Thomas Roche, Officer James Farrenkopf and Officer Ryan Close responded to the call at around 5 p.m. Monday.

According to Chief Bill Baker, the officers ran along the river to the scene, deployed ropes and life rings and were able to pull the boy out of the ice hole and out of the river to safety in the area of Cumberland Street and the Black Bridge.

The boy was transported to Maine Medical Center for routine evaluation, Baker said.
