PORTLAND — Charles B. “Chick” Weir, 79, of Pownal, died Jan. 26.
He was born on April 23, 1929, in Flushing, N.Y., a son of Nevada Ruth Shott and Gordon Everett Weir.
The family moved to Ohio where he graduated from Lakewood High School and attended Baldwin Wallace College.
In 1950, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served as a pilot and safety officer. On his birthday in 1960, he married Jean Dee. They had three children together.
After his retirement from the Air Force in 1970, the family moved to Pownal.
He volunteered his time teaching Sunday school at the North Pownal United Methodist Church and as Boy Scout leader.
His hobbies included vegetable gardening and woodworking. A nativity scene he carved especially for his church is still in use today.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 49 years, Jean Weir of Pownal; son Jeffrey S. Weir of Middlegrove, N.Y., son Frederick C. Weir of Pownal, daughter Jeanet M. Tilton and her husband Christopher of Durham; granddaughter Gabriel “Gabby” Tilton of Durham and grandson Christopher “CJ” Tilton Jr., of Durham.
A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m., April 23, at the chapel of the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
