Going into the second half with a six-point lead last Friday night, it looked like the Windham girls basketball team had finally seized the momentum over Biddeford.
But a quick start to the second half by the Tigers erased the Eagles’ lead, setting up a see-saw battle for the rest of the way, a battle which the Eagles eventually won, pulling out a 49-42 win at home.
The win was an upset for the Eagles, who ran their record to 8-6 with the win over the 11-3 Tigers, who are ranked No. 3 in the Heal Points. The Eagles are in good position as the playoffs approach, sitting at No. 4 in the latest Heal Point standings.
Helen Libby came up big for the Eagles in the fourth quarter, scoring eight of her team-high 16 points in the final eight minutes, including two huge free throws with 6.7 seconds left to seal the win for Windham. Riley Graves chipped in with nine points for the Eagles and Jenna Willey had 11 rebounds and four points.
The Eagles couldn’t keep the momentum going on Tuesday night as they lost to No. 7 Marshwood on the road 48-45. The loss dropped Windham’s record to 8-7 and the Hawks improved to 9-6 with the win.
Windham trailed 26-17 at the half, but closed the gap to 38-33 at the end of the third. However, the Eagles couldn’t get over the hump, and despite outscoring Marshwood 12-10 in the final quarter, the Hawks held on for the win.
Graves led the Eagles with 10 points in the game and Kelsey McGowan chipped in with eight points for Windham.
The Windham girls will be back in action Friday night, as they travel to Massabesic to take on the No. 12 Mustangs in a 7 p.m. game.
