BRUNSWICK — Sanford R. “Sandy” Sistare, 80, died Dec. 22 at Mid Coast Hospital.
He was born in Springfield, Mass., on May 22, 1928, the son of Willard Moulton and Marion (Rice) Sistare.
He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1950.
After graduation, he served in the Korean War as a radar technician in the U.S. Air Force. Before being transferred overseas, he married Mary Anne Littleton of Gladwyne, Pa., in 1952.
He later earned a master’s degree in American civilization studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He taught grammar school in Pennsylvania.
They moved to Boxford, Mass., where he worked for the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
In 1968, he started teaching at Paul’s School in Concord, N.H., where he taught American literature, history, and served as director of admissions and dean of students. He was most proud of forming their first girls’ ice hockey team, serving as head coach for many years.
He and his wife retired to Brunswick in 1989.
He was active in the United Way, the Maine Maritime Museum, was treasurer of the Maine State Theater, and served on the board of directors of Mid Coast Hospital. He was class agent of the Bowdoin Class of 1950 for nearly 50 years.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Mary Sistare of Brunswick; three sons, Arthur Sistare and his wife Sonya of Reno, Nev., Willard Sistare II and his wife Paula of Simsbury, Conn., and Jonathan Sistare and his wife Kathleen of Dublin, N.H.; and two daughters, Debra Holsapple and her husband Jeffrey of Post Falls, Idaho, and Julia Helferich and her husband Randy of Sheridan, Wyo.; and 11 grandchildren.
A celebration of his life will be held in the spring.
