WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Sen. Susan Collins announced Friday that 12 counties will receive nearly $875,000 in federal funds for emergency food and shelter programs.
Cumberland County is expected to receive more than $150,000, while Androscoggin County is expect to receive about $75,500.
The funds are being administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency within the Department of Homeland Security.
Funds for the Emergency Food and Shelter Program are distributed by a national board using a formula that includes unemployment and poverty statistics in each county. The national board consists of representatives of the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities, United Jewish Communities, the National Council of the Churches of Christ, the Salvation Army and the United Way of America.
Local boards made up of individuals and organizations that live and work within each county are responsible for spending the funds, which typically support local soup kitchens, the Meals-on-Wheels program, food shelters or emergency shelter or housing needs.
