Season outlook: The league is very deep this year and the Rams will challenge for a playoff spot. They are not returning any starters from last year. The team is young and inexperienced, but excited to make some noise in the SMAA.
Sport: Girls basketball
Coach: Laughn Berthiaume (2nd year)
Last year’s record: 6-12, Lost in Class A prelims to Biddeford
Key players: Gorham’s returning starters are: Jill Russell, Kayleigh Ballantyne, and Natalie Egbert. In addition, Kristi Zarrilli, Kristi Brown, Elizabeth Lamontagne and Alyssa Clark are all returning to the squad.
Key games this season: “Every game we play will be key for us,” Berthiaume said. “At this point, I think we will be competitive because of the defensive depth that we have. We will be able to tell early how good we can be when we play the defending state champion Deering Rams on Dec. 12.”
Season outlook: “We will need to find ways to be consistent on the offensive end,” Berthiaume said. “Our team will focus on defensive pressure to keep us in games, but finding the scoring touch will be key to our success. We will look to attack the basket and improve our free throw shooting. We should be competing for a playoff spot.”
Sport: Boys indoor track
Coach: John Wilkinson
Last year’s record: 5-3, Southwestern Conference champions for second year in a row; fourth in the Class A state championships
Key athletes: Cam Stevens, junior, sprints; Mike Greatorex, senior, sprints; Jake Willis, junior, sprints; Evan Lambert, junior, pole vault; Brett Walker, senior, jumps; Brandon Patten, senior, sprints; Chris Esposito, senior, sprints and jumps
Season outlook: “We graduated some outstanding seniors who were great contributors to our program,” Wilkinson said. “We are returning many fine athletes who were major contributors last season, so we are looking to be very competitive again this winter season. A strong middle school track and cross country program also should continue to provide some solid underclassmen.”
Sport: Girls indoor track
Coach: John Caterina
Last year’s record: 8-3, fourth place at the SMAA championship meet, third place at the Class A state meet
Key players: Seniors: Molly Folan (sprints), Sarah McCullough (mid-distance), Siobhan Bolinger (shot put), Sara Burnheimer (jumps); Juniors: Lauren Chouinard (sprints), Solange Carpenter (mid-distance), Sara Martin (mid-distance), Hannah Prince (sprints); Kelsey Rex (distance), Emily Southard (jumps), Rachel Wilkinson (distance-defending two mile state champion)
Season outlook: Gorham graduated a lot of points from last year’s Class A 3rd place team but should remain a very competitive team. They may struggle in regular season meets due to lack of numbers, but should be strong in the league championship and state meet.
Sport: Ice hockey
Coach: Jon Portwine (1st season)
Last year’s record: 5-15 missed playoffs
Key players: Seniors David Gushee (forward), Ian Ryan (forward), Jake Viel (defense), Juniors Mike Bowring (goalie), Justin Bahr (defense), Spencer Violette (forward/defense), and Sean Grandmaison (forward).
Key games this season: Cheverus, Bonny Eagle and Portland
Season outlook: The Rams’ three seniors, all four-year lettermen, will be looked upon to provide strong leadership for a group with a ton of potential. Portwine said he feels that the Rams have a shot at the playoffs this season. “Through hard work, commitment, a renewed sense of team, and a favorable schedule, we look to have an impressive win loss record in the regular season setting us up to make a statement in the playoffs,” he said.
