Students in the University of Southern Maine School of Music who are particularly interested and talented in composition will premiere new works in the USM Composers’ Showcase on Saturday, Dec. 6 under the direction of Dan Sonenberg.

The concert gets under way at 8 p.m. in Corthell Concert Hall on the USM Gorham campus. Admission is free. Call 780-5555 for more information.

The concert begins with the Composers Ensemble performing the opening two scenes of Marcus Bagala’s “Tristan and Isolde,” a re-conception of the famous opera as a piece in the Broadway style. Bagala, of Gray, hopes to do with “Tristan and Isolde” what “Rent” did with Pucinni’s “La Boheme.” The group will also perform Bagala’s “For Molly,” a tune in the style of Django Reinhardt.

Among the other works premiering are:

A percussive romp, “Meditation and Fire Dance,” by Timothy

Burns of Biddeford, was conceived for the Composers Ensemble and is conducted by the composer.

Shirin Hunold of Gorham wrote “Thoughts,” a fantasy for solo piano in an accessible, extended tonal language featuring pianist Ben Heller.

“Der Wolf und die sieben, jungen Geisslein” is a 10-minute setting of a Grimm’s fairy tale, complete with a big bad wolf. This mini opera is grand in scope and orchestral color, and is composed by the ensemble’s only graduate composer, Paul Thomas of Buxton.

“A Common Misconception,” by Brian Tingdahl of Saco, is a virtuosic work for solo marimba performed by Jenna Nelson.
