After a 1-0 overtime loss last Thursday to Gorham, the three-time defending Class A state champs who haven’t lost since 2005, the Windham girls soccer team proved to the rest of the SMAA that it could compete with anyone.

On Tuesday night, it was a different story as the Eagles (3-3) were thoroughly outplayed at home by Scarborough (3-1-2), falling to the Red Storm 4-0.

“I just felt like Scarborough was ready to play this game similar to how we were ready to play against Gorham,” said Windham coach Wally LeBlanc. “I wish I could say it was something we didn’t do, but I think all the credit goes to Scarborough. They really came at us and played an intelligent game. They took it to us. They made us look like we didn’t belong out on that field tonight.”

Scarborough took the lead with 15:54 to go in the first half as Jenn Colpitts broke into the box on the left side. Windham keeper Riley Graves came out to make a sliding stop, but the ball deflected off her hands to the foot of Red Storm forward Courtney Hughes, who knocked it into an open net from eight yards out.

It was 1-0 at the half, but the Red Storm came out strong after the break. Less than 1:30 into the second half, Lauren Blaisdell took a pass from Tori Armishaw and scored on a breakaway. Three minutes later, Blaisdell was again all alone, but Graves came up with the save.

Scarborough kept possession in its offensive end for the majority of the second half, adding another goal with 6:40 to play as Alexandra Pastore dribbled up the middle of the field and sent a pass to Blaisdell on the left wing. Blaisdell put it into the net to make it 3-0. Just over two minutes later, Lauren Aceto knocked in a cross from Mimi Abrams for the final score.

“Our forwards made really good runs and our midfielders did a good job of laying balls in,” said Scarborough coach Mike Farley. “Windham is a great team. There’s a reason why they took Gorham to overtime. Every year with us it has been a one-goal game. We just really hit our stride today and that made a big difference.”

After staring the season with a tie and a 4-1 loss to Gorham, Scarborough defeated Noble 5-0 its last time out.

“We just hadn’t been scoring goals, but in these last two games, we scored nine goals, so it seems like we’re getting confidence, we’re getting some breaks,” Farley said. “We had a really tough time in the beginning of the year scoring goals. We were playing pretty well, we just weren’t getting any bounces.”

Scarborough had a 15-5 edge on shots and a 6-0 advantage on corner kicks. Red Storm net minder Jill Deering made five stops in goal for the shutout. She was rarely tested as her teammates controlled the midfield.

“They stepped up and we’re winning 50-50 balls where we just backed off,” LeBlanc said. “Sometimes when a team comes out with that kind of intensity, you step back and try to play defense, but you can’t do that.”

“When the ball came out, we would win it and settle it back, so they never really had a chance to get forward with numbers,” Farley said. “Every time they countered on us, it was two or three against four.”

Consistency will be key for the Eagles as they look to get back on track on the road Saturday against Cheverus, another top team.

“What’s important to me is for us to believe that we can play with the best teams in the league,” LeBlanc said. “We did that against Gorham, but then tonight we didn’t do it. I want us to see us play every game on our schedule, against whoever it is, as hard as we can possibly play.”
