The U.S. Department of Justice has awarded an Edward Byrne Memorial State and Local Law Enforcement Assistance Grant in the total amount of $82,217 to the City of Biddeford, U.S. Representative Tom Allen announced on Aug. 24.

The grant will be used by the York County Sheriff’s Office ($18,910) for tactical training and equipment; by the Biddeford Police Department ($33,092) for five patrol cruiser in-car cameras; and by the Sanford Police Department ($30,215) for four in-car cameras, mobile data terminals and other equipment.

In addition, the City of Westbrook was awarded a Byrne Grant of $15,827 to conduct investigations of applicants for sensitive positions, to conduct criminal investigations and to purchase a digital video system of one cruiser to preserve evidence.

“This program is a wise investment in crime control and prevention needs identified by local law enforcement officials,” said Rep. Allen. “The eligible uses for these funds range from traditional training to the purchase of modern technology that ensures better communication and preservation of evidence. These enhancements will benefit both law officers and the public.”

The Byrne Formula Grant Program, named in honor of a New York City police officer killed in the line of duty, is a partnership among federal, state, and local governments to create safer communities. Grants are awarded to states and local government to improve the functioning of the criminal justice system.

Recipients may use grants to provide personnel, equipment, training, technical assistance, and information systems for more widespread apprehension, prosecution, adjudication, detention, and rehabilitation of offenders who violate such state and local laws.
