It’s almost time for school to start. Consolidated schools replaced District schools many years ago. In Windham, back in 1817, School District 8 (of 19 districts) included the area known historically as Bakers Corner, named for the Baker family who lived there and ran a store. The district included 68 scholars (from 24 homes) in an area from the corner of Falmouth Road and Route 202 to above the Brand Road. The schoolhouse shown here was called the Bakers Corner School and sometimes the Clark School. It was 24 feet by 22 feet in size, valued at $175 and had a capacity of 36 students. Overcrowding was common in the schools, even then! The school was located on Route 202 and the corner of Brand Road. History isn’t clear on the disposition of this building after the state abolished district schools. Some say it was moved to the lot next door and used as a slaughterhouse while others say it was used as part of Cole’s drive-in restaurant in Gray. It is no longer standing; long ago, family built a home on the site. Photo courtesy of Windham Historical Society
