Editor,
While the Windham Town Council is investigating the cost of parts for school bus doors, perhaps someone will be as curious about the report (June 1 edition of Lakes Region Suburban Weekly) that “a few hundred books” have gone missing at the high school, ostensibly because of a defective gate.
A few hundred books equals thousands of taxpayer dollars. Figure it out. If a book costs $50 or $60, 100 books would be $5,000-$6,000. And the newspaper article reported “a few hundred,” even more alarming to me.
Is this an annual problem? How much does it cost to fix the gate (to the library)? And what does the gate have to do with it – aren’t books checked out, as they are at the public library, by a staff person?
Is anyone else concerned with this loss?
Councilors want senior citizens to get involved and speak up – well, this senior is speaking up. The cost of a few hundred missing books represents more than the annual income of many of your tax-paying and voting senior constituents.
