It may still be summer, but if you have been by any of the area’s high schools lately you have probably seen some football players tossing the pigskin and maybe a few soccer balls being kicked around. With the new school year just a few short weeks away, fall sports teams have begun their preseason practices.
The Bonny Eagle football team was stopped short of their goal of winning a state championship last season. Coach Kevin Cooper has turned a once downtrodden program into one of the state’s elite. The Scots are looking to be one of the top teams again this fall.
The Windham football team showed much improvement as the season went on last year. They have a solid group of players returning and should threaten for a playoff spot.
The Lake Region football team had some ups and downs last year. They will look to get things headed in the right direction this year and may be able to secure a spot in the tournament.
Bonny Eagle’s soccer teams will once again be tournament caliber. Both the boys team and the girls teams had highs and lows last season and will look for more improvement this year.
The Windham soccer teams will be strong once again. Last year, the boys team was hindered a bit by their youth. This year, those players have more maturity and experience and could be a serious contender in the west. Lake Region will try to make some serious noise in Class B.
The Bonny Eagle field hockey team is always one of the stronger teams and this year should be no different. After being bounced from the tourney by Gorham, the Scots will have revenge on their minds as they seek another Class A title.
Windham’s field hockey team featured a lot of underclassmen last year and with that nucleus could be very strong this year. Lake Region’s field hockey team will be seeking a tournament appearance this season as well.
Bonny Eagle doesn’t have the biggest cross-country team around but they have a solid core of young, talented runners. They could surprise some people. Windham and Lake Region also don’t have huge teams, but they also have talented runners who should get some top finishes.
The local golf teams and volleyball teams have also gotten underway. Fall sports officially begin on Aug. 31 with nearly every team in action.
