Editor,
I want to compliment you on the articles written by Emily Devlin that appeared in the Aug. 3 issue of the Lakes Region Suburban Weekly. Many people are unaware of how serious the problem is or may become. I have noticed milfoil near public boat ramps and at marinas. Certainly the marinas should accept some of the responsibility for the problem. If Sebago Lake water levels were allowed to fluctuate from spring to fall like they used to (pre-1987) a lot of this nuisance aquatic plant would be killed over the winter.
I believe I read recently that the Little Sebago Lake Association had a budget of about $179,000 for milfoil mitigation this year and that the state had given them a paltry $8,000 for this activity a year or two ago.
I would suggest you do an in-depth investigation into the total annual revenues raised by the state of Maine from sales of the so-called Milfoil Sticker and a complete breakdown as to where those funds go. I think we would all be shocked and dismayed. My guess is that a large percentage goes to the bureaucrats and some may even may be used for other purposes.
