Editor,
As a Standish resident, I purchase the Lakes Region paper to find out what is happening on issues that the Portland papers can’t be bothered to address, and I have followed with interest the issue of overspending of school departments which has become a hot topic of late.
However, when I read the headline which clearly uses a word meaning “illegal” (illicit) for a word which means “to draw a response or reaction” (elicit), I wonder if anyone does actual proof reading or if Spellcheck is the last line of defense.
I may be the only one who calls your paper on this, hopefully I am not the only one who takes note. In a society where actual reading of books and newspapers is done more online than in hard copy, perhaps such grammatical errors are unimportant, but it reflects poorly on the reputation of the newspaper.
Thank you for your time,
Isabel Higgins
