In Windham, in the early days, the town was divided into 19 school districts. John Andrew’s School, as shown on this postcard view, was in District 2, also known as Little Falls. The school was built about 1900 on High Street and was named for Andrew, born next door to the school, who was governor of Massachusetts during the Civil War. This school burned in March of 1925, and children went to school temporarily at the Oriental Hall on Main Street in South Windham Village. A new school was built in 1926, and is still standing today. It has had many additions over the years and is today used as an alternative learning facility called R.E.A.L. school.
