At about 1 p.m. Monday afternoon, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, the Maine Warden Service and the Standish Fire Department responded to a reported drowning of a 69-year-old man in the Wards Cove area of Sebago Lake.

According to Chief Deputy Kevin Joyce, Charles Goy, a resident of Warwick, R.I. and seasonal resident of Standish, and his daughter were on the lake in two separate row boats when Goy told his daughter of his intentions to swim to shore. Goy attached his boat to a mooring and proceeded to jump in the water. Goy failed to resurface and, according to authorities, was believed to be underwater for about 10 minutes. Standish Rescue transported Goy to Maine Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The Goy family was staying at their seasonal home in Standish at the time of drowning.

The incident is being investigated by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and the Medical Examiner’s Office.
