Four artists who work in encaustics and whose styles are very different from one another will be the featured artists in Encaustics: The Art of Painting With Wax, at Hole In The Wall Studioworks, located on Route 302 in Raymond.

Debra Claffey, Janet Bartlett Goodman, Tracy Mastro and Charyl Weissbach will be at their opening reception on Saturday, June 30, from 6-8 p.m. The public is invited to meet the artists, view their work and enjoy refreshments. The show will continue through July 31.

While encaustic painting has been around for over 1,000 years, it hasn’t been a popular medium with contemporary artists. However, there is a renewed interest in encaustics. This may be due, in part, to the recent showings of encaustics in galleries across the country. Also, the tools and materials to do encaustics are more readily available today.

Working in encaustics can be quite a challenge for the artist. One must paint while the wax is hot. The surface of the painting has to be kept warm. And fumes from the hot wax are toxic, and must be vented to the outside. Still, for an increasing number of artists, it is their medium of choice.
