Scarborough is a sun bather’s and bird-watcher’s paradise with miles of beaches and salt marshes. Walk or bike the many trails, canoe or kayak the waterways or stop in at the renown Len Libby Candies, on Route 1, to satisfy your sweet tooth and view the world’s largest chocolate moose. With those for a need for speed, take in the harness racing at Scarborough Downs or auto racing at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway.
1. Scarborough Downs Harness Race Track
90 Payne Rd., Scarborough, 883-4331. Watch harness racing at Scarborough Downs, home of New England’s fastest half-mile track. The track features live racing April through December and offers simulcasting from all the top tracks from across the United States and Canada, 363 days a year. Scarborough Downs also features clubhouse dining with a bird’s eye view of the track. For race days and post times, go to www.scarboroughdowns.com.
2. Thursday Concerts in the Park
Memorial Park, off Sawyer St. in Scarborough (directly behind town hall), 772-2811. On Thursday evenings throughout July and August, the Scarborough Community Chamber of Commerce will hold concerts in Memorial Park. Performers include: July 5 – Coos Canyon; July 12 – Bob Charest Band; July 19 – Wavelength; July 26 – Don Campbell Band; Aug. 2 – Motor Booty Affair; and Aug. 9 – the Tony Boffa Band. The concerts start at 6:30 p.m.
3. Surfing at Higgins Beach
Located off Route 77 in Scarborough. Go surfing or buggy boarding at Higgins Beach. This small beach is a favorite spot for those looking to catch a few waves. Portland restaurateur David Turin runs a surf camp at the beach throughout the summer. Go online to to www.surfcampme.com. But beware: the beach is closed to surfing 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 15-Sept. 15.
4. Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center
Pine Point Road, Scarborough, 883-5100. Take a moonlight canoe tour of Scarborough Marsh, the state’s largest saltmarsh, with the Maine Audubon Society. Experiencing the marsh by moonlight is truly a unique experience. The society also offers canoe tours of the marsh daily in the summertime and birding walks on Wednesday mornings. The tours are offered on July 27, 28 and 29. A sunset tour is offered on July 22. Moonlight tours leave the nature center at 8 p.m., and the sunset tour leaves at 7 p.m.
5. The Eastern Trail
Trail heads are located off both Pine Point Road and Black Point Road in Scarborough. Go online to www.easterntrail.org for trail maps. Take a hike on one of the most scenic sections of the Eastern Trail as it runs through the Scarborough Marsh. A walk on the trail is a great way to get some exercise and take in beautiful views of the marsh.
6. Pine Point Beach
Located at the end of Pine Point Road in Scarborough. At low tide you can walk the sandbar from Pine Point Beach almost to Prouts Neck. The beach is also home to piping plovers, small sand-colored birds found on beaches along the East Coast. Pine Point Beach has protected habitat areas for the birds. Dogs and people are not allowed within 150 feet of a marked habitat area.
7. Golfing
Go golfing at one of two public golf courses in Scarborough. The Willowdale Golf Club is located just off Route 1 at 52 Willowdale Rd. The club has 18 holes with a par 70. Call 883-9351 or go to www.willowdalegolf.com. The Nonesuch River Golf Club is located at 304 Gorham Rd. It is also an 18-hole, par-70 course. Call 883-0007.
8. Ice Cream
After a day at the beach, nothing is more satisfying than cooling off with a little ice cream. Scarborough has a couple great ice cream stands near Pine Point Beach. Beals Ice Cream is located at 161 Pine Point Rd., and the Dairy Corner is located on the corner of Pine Point Road and Route 1.
9. Maine Indoor Karting
23 Washington Ave., Scarborough, 885-0058, or go online at info@maineindoorkarting.com. Maine Indoor Karting offers fast, safe, fun and real racing. Get into a kart and find out why Maine Indoor Karting is the number one inside karting track in New England. A typical race is eight minutes long, averaging between 18 to 22 laps. Enjoy speeds of up to 40 miles per hour.
10. Scarborough Public Library
47 Gorham Rd., Scarborough, 883-4723, or go online to www.library.scarborough.me.us. The Scarborough Library has a large collection of books, movies and music, as well as periodicals and local newspapers. The library also hosts a variety of special events and lectures.
