The Windham High boys tennis team was within one win of returning to the Class A state championship, but the Eagles lost a 4-1 decision to Westbrook in the West A regional final on Wednesday, June 6. In 2006, the Eagles won the regional crown and they battled Lewiston in the state final where the Blue Devils were victorious.
Windham had marched through the tournament with a 4-1 quarterfinal win over Gorham followed by a nail-biting 3-2 semifinal victory over Scarborough. The Eagles then met a Westbrook team they had defeated during the regular season by a 3-2 margin.
But last week, it was Westbrook that came away with the win as the Blazes claimed their first regional tennis championship.
The Blazes’ Eben Perkins topped Nick DiFiore at No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-1) and Brian Cooke downed Adam Mitchell at No. 2 singles (6-1, 7-5). The No. 3 singles match also went in favor of the Blazes with David Born stopping Dan McGovern 6-3, 6-3.
Westbrook earned their fourth point at No. 1 doubles where Jake Laviolet and Alex Foster defeated Justin Kuliga and Nate Johnson (6-3, 6-4). The Eagles picked up their only point of the match at No. 2 doubles thanks to a solid outing from the team of Kyle Morrell and Fernando Leon-Pradl who beat Ian Levinsky and Galen Perkins 6-3, 6-0.
