The Society is a nonprofit educational organization and has many displays of Windham’s history as well as books, maps, commemorative coins, keychains, coverlets and other historical items for sale. The ancient horse-drawn town hearse is on display at the Old Grocery. Information on Windham’s cemeteries and old families is readily available as well as genealogical information for those doing research.
Library
To celebrate spring, the library has a beautiful collection of bird nests on display from Stephen Signor, of Windham, through June 29. There are nine nests indigenous to the Northeast, specifically of Maine, on display in the case.
Signor has always been interested in birds, but his particular interest in nests developed while researching their habitats over the past three years. He finds the construction method and the amount of time put into the nests very interesting, as well as the number of variations and color of eggs for each bird type.
The nests on display have mock eggs, along with identification tags and a “quiz” that the public can take to test its knowledge of identifying the nests.
Stop by the library for a look at this wonderful collection. The Windham Public Library is located at 217 Windham Center Road. Call the library for more information about the display, for library hours or for directions at 892-1908.
