The Windham High baseball team has lost three straight games and they now stand at 7-7 with the end of the regular season in sight. The Eagles’ latest setback was a 4-0 shutout loss at Gorham on Tuesday evening.
Windham was at No. 8 in the most recent West A Heal Point standings, but another win or two to end the regular campaign would go a long way toward helping the Eagles enter the regional tourney in the right frame of mind and with a little momentum.
The Eagles managed just four hits off Gorham ace Andrew Dean and they managed just five hits in a 5-3 loss to Thornton on Monday. Windham’s pitching has been solid all season, but they’ll likely need to start generating more offense as the tourney approaches.
Bonny Eagle still struggling
The Bonny Eagle baseball team battled and battled all season, but their struggles continue as the Scots dropped to 0-13 with a 6-2 loss at Marshwood on Tuesday afternoon. And on Monday the Scots were shutout by top-ranked Deering in a 10-0 contest.
The Scots have lost four games by one run (to Thornton, Noble, Windham and Massabesic) and two games by two runs (to Cheverus and South Portland), so it’s not like they’re getting pounded by their opponents. In those six close games, a hit here or a hit there combined with a key defensive stop might well given the Scots at least a handful of wins by now.
They finish with games against Scarborough, Biddeford and Thornton.
Lakers’ woes continue
Lake Region’s baseball team has also had a difficult spring on the diamond. In their most recent setback, the Lakers (2-9) were stomped by Greely to the tune of 22-1. The Rangers scored four in the first, 10 in the second and then eight more before the game was halted after the fifth inning via the mercy rule.
It should be noted that Greely is one of the top teams in the region sporting a 10-1 record after that win. And the Lakers, like Bonny Eagle in Class A, have battled all year despite allowing too many runs and always being forced to play catch-up.
They scored a pair of nice wins earlier this month against Freeport and Cape Elizabeth and they’ll continue to plug away with their remaining slate of games against Gray-New Gloucester, North Yarmouth Academy and St. Dom’s.
