The following towns around the Lakes Region are holding special events to commemorate Memorial Day on Monday, May 28:
Windham:
The Windham Memorial Day Parade starts at 9:30 a.m. on Route 202 in Windham Center. Parade participants will assemble at the town offices on School Road and proceed from the intersection of School Road along Route 202 to the Windham High School.
Windham Fire Department apparatus, veterans driven in convertible antique cars, the Maine Correctional Center Color Guard, a National Guard unit, vintage farm tractors and school bands and choruses are expected to take part.
Immediately following the parade at 10 a.m., veterans will assemble on the grounds of the high school for a wreath-laying ceremony. Everyone is welcome to observe this solemn occasion.
Standish: No parade
Casco: No parade
Raymond:
While there is no town parade set, there is a ceremony dedicating a new Raymond veterans memorial stone monument at the Panther Run Rest Area across from The Good Life Market on Route 302. With the dedication, the rest area will be renamed The Raymond Veterans Memorial Park.
The new monument, which was the brainchild of Raymond resident Howard Stiles, is a tribute to Raymond veterans and family from away who have military connections. The Raymond Lions Club funded the flags and flagpoles at the park. Local Eagle Scout Steven Lentini spent many hours laying a brick and granite paver walkway.
Speakers at Monday’s event include Rep. John Robinson and Maine Army National Guard Major General John Libby. Patriotic songs will be provided by a combined chorus from Raymond Elementary School and Jordan Small Middle School.
All are welcome to attend. Parking is available in the nearby Chipco parking lot. Refreshments will follow the ceremony.
Naples, Sebago:
The Naples parade, put on by American Legion Post 155, will start at 10 a.m. with speakers on the village green. Rep. Rich Cebra and Naples Town Manager Derik Goodine are featured speakers. The parade will then commence at the village green ending at the Naples Causeway. Fire department apparatus, the Lake Region High School Band and American Legion Color Guard and Firing Squad will be featured.
Once the parade reaches the causeway, veterans will throw a wreath into Long Lake and a gun salute will fire. After the ceremony, there will be an open house at the American Legion Hall on Route 11.
As is customary, some of the participants in the Naples parade will travel to the neighboring town of Sebago to take part in Sebago Memorial Day parade. While it depends on how long the Naples parade runs, the Sebago parade is estimated to start at about 11:30 a.m. at the Rustic Barrel on Route 114. The parade route ends at Veterans Park, also on Route 114.
