Unless the Windham High softball team stumbles badly down the stretch, it looks more and more like
the Eagles will host a West A prelim when the regional tourney begins on June 5.
The Eagles are No. 6 in the most recent Heal Point standings and a loss at Gorham on Tuesday night drops them to 5-8 on the season. And they finish their schedule against three opponents ranked well below them in the standings (Marshwood, Massabesic, and Noble), which means they’re likely not to gain many more Heal Points even if they sweep all three games.
Windham is battling Kennebunk, Gorham and Thornton as all four teams are trying to secure a ranking somewhere between six and eight so that they can host a prelim rather than hit the road during the prelim round.
Bonny Eagle could avoid a prelim
The Bonny Eagle softball team was at No. 5 in this week’s West A Heal Point standings. And that position is significant because the top five teams in the regional tournament earn byes into the quarterfinal round while teams 6-11 face one another in prelim games that will determine the remaining three teams who’ll play in the quarters.
If these standings remain the same, the Scots would face-off against No. 4 South Portland in the quarterfinal round. Those two teams played one another on Monday in South Portland where the Riots scored a 3-2 victory.
On Tuesday, the Scots pounded Cheverus pitching with a 12-run first inning to take a 13-1 win over the Stags in Standish.
Busy week for Lake Region
Lake Region was ranked No. 3 in this week’s West B Heal Points race. They have an 8-3 record following Monday’s 9-5 loss to Greely with five games left to play.
The Lakers will be hoping for a good stretch of weather as they need to play five more games in order to complete their regular season by Wednesday, May 30. They were scheduled to play at Gray-New Gloucester on Wednesday, May 23, and they are schedules to host North Yarmouth Academy on Friday, May 25.
