After months of planning, Windham Summerfest is being pulled kicking and screaming out of dormancy.

The June festival was last held in 2001 and was organized by only two people. In 2002, construction at the high school did away with the event. On June 23, the grounds of the Windham High School will rumble under the weight of Summerfest 2007.

Proposed events include rides in a Blackhawk helicopter, a four-on-four soccer tournament and a frog jumping contest where children see whose frog can go the farthest in 15 seconds.

“The kids have to bring their own frogs, so its BYOF,” said Brian Ross, director of the Windham Parks & Recreation Department. His department is organizing Summerfest with the help of a committee of citizens and area businesses.

“We’re hoping that it brings back a tradition that the town can get behind,” said Ron Eby, committee member and owner of Windham Automotive.

Eby and his employees have constructed a moveable cantina to sell Mexican food with all the money collected going to Camp Sunshine. He said he enlisted the help of Hancock Lumber in constructing an elaborate colorful booth called “Ron’s Mexican Cantina and Grill.”

“I hope it’s going to bring a lot of fun,” he said.

More than 40 vendors have signed on so far, Ross said.

“We’re hoping we can fit more in,” he said. Ross said the committee has been essential in planning an event that will include musical acts, fireworks, a parade, skateboard competition and a softball match between the fire and police departments.

“It was awfully hard for one person to get it together,” said Lynn Morrell of past Summerfests.

The event is slated to start at 7:30 a.m. on June 23 with an organized walk at the track. The parade is scheduled for 9 a.m. and various events will continue throughout the day, with a fireworks display at dusk. Registration deadline for the soccer tournament is June 8.
