A phone call I received earlier in the week regarding the elm trees that once lined the roads and streets of Windham prompted the choice of photo this week. This is taken in the early 1900s, in Windham Center, looking down the Windham Center Road toward the direction of Portland. Hawkes store would have been on the left (where Corsetti’s is today) and the buildings on the right, shaded by that tall elm, were the grain store (today’s Old Grocery Museum) and Windham Center Library (located today by the Historical Society). The elms in Windham, as in all towns in Maine, fell to the Dutch Elm disease, despite thousands of dollars spent to try and save them. Photo from the archives of Windham Historical Society
