Protect our water resources

1 min read

On behalf of water works professionals throughout Maine, I would like to remind the public during National Drinking Water Week (May 6-12) about the tremendous importance of a safe, reliable water supply – and the water system that delivers it – in our everyday lives.

Each community water supply meets rigorous federal and state safety and health-protective standards. As a result, consumers can drink from virtually any public water tap in the country without fear of contracting waterborne diseases that kill more than 3 million people annually in other parts of the world.

In terms of fire protection, a well-maintained water system that provides reliable water supplies at an adequate pressure can be the difference between a small fire and an urban inferno.

A safe, sustainable water supply is fundamental to successful economic growth and prosperity, which, in turn, creates new jobs and an expanding local tax base.

From a strong public health record to a high standard of living, safe, dependable water supply and service contributes immensely to our unprecedented quality of life.

To continue benefiting from the tremendous value of safe, reliable water supply and service, I urge consumers to support local initiatives to conserve and protect these resources, and to reinvest in improved water infrastructure.

For further information, please contact your local water utility or visit www.newwa.org.
