If you have been away for the winter and just got back, you might not have heard about the Active Aging Expo, to be held Wednesday, May 23, at the Portland Sports Complex, Warren Avenue. This is the 29th year for this very popular special day – which used to be called Elders Day.
This is an annual free event sponsored by Southern Maine Agency on Aging, and it runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is plenty of parking and while I haven’t seen an up-to-date list of exhibitors, some of the events have been established.
The town of Windham’s senior programming has this trip on its spring schedule. There will be tons of free information, samples and demonstrations of interest to senior citizens and their families.
On the night before, Tuesday, May 22, comedian Susan Poulin will give a 7 p.m. special performance of “The Full Angel.” This performance features vignettes about a family reshaped by a mother’s illness and death. The memoir is designed to make you laugh, cry and be grateful for the people in your life. Words will be projected on a screen for people who are hard of hearing. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., at the Portland Sports Complex at the Dome. Suggested donation is $3.
Wednesday, the day of the full-fledged Expo is crammed full of exciting opportunities.
A free antiques appraisal by Julianne Kane of Front Porch Appraisal Services sounds appealing to me. You may bring one small item per person. I guess that means we don’t roll in an antique desk, but wouldn’t it be fun to know what that old teaspoon is really worth – or about the necklace we’ve hoarded all these years. This is just one of many features of the Expo.
Need answers to a problem about plants? Visit “The Garden Expert” Eileen Scalli of Badgewick Design. She can help with your plant and landscaping questions.
Eight health and legal seminars are in the works, as well as health screenings. And you can get your blood pressure checked, as well.
A healthy lunch will be available for $5, but admission to the special day is free.
Visit the Art Van Exhibit and create a piece of the “Aging with an Active Spirit” collage, or take a break and listen to the Daybreak Quartet, Al Doane Quartet or the Maine State Music Theatre.
Dozens of exhibits will be available and if this event is like other SMAA events, there will be a lot of free and very helpful information.
Door prizes and a special grand prize raffle will make the day extra special.
Sponsors of Active Aging Expo include Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution, Northeast Community Care, TD Banknorth, Anthem, Hannaford, Home Instead Senior Care, L.L. Bean, MacDonald Page & Co., MaineHealth, The Park Danforth and Medicare Complete by United Healthcare.
