Officials at St. Joseph’s College in Standish are investigating the source of a problem that made at least three students ill with breathing problems Monday night.
Feeney Hall was evacuated at approximately 10 p.m. Monday, after three students reported feeling ill with upper respiratory problems.
William McCarthy, a St. Joseph’s College spokesperson, said the three students all lived in the same eight-person suite. Two of the students were evaluated at the scene and released to their parents and one student was taken to the hospital, and released a few hours later, McCarthy said.
Two ambulances responded to the scene Monday night, McCarthy said. Feeney Hall resident Tom Gulino said EMTs were administering first aid when he walked by the dorm the scene at 10 p.m. He and some friends then went to the back of the hall to get into their rooms.
“We went around the back and used those doors to get in. We didn’t know there was a big problem,” he said.
Shortly after he returned to his room, Gulino said the dorm was evacuated. “We were told we all needed to leave the building,” he said.
Approximately 121 students live in Feeney Hall, and all of them were asked to evacuate to the Heffernan Center on campus, McCarthy said.
Gulino said they waited in Heffernan Center for nearly two hours before being allowed back in the dorm. Students were not told why they were evacuated or why they deemed it safe for re-entry, Gulino said.
McCarthy said the Standish Fire Department evaluated the entire building and found nothing wrong. However, McCarthy added as a precautionary measure, the suite where the three students lived is still closed pending further inspection. He said the college hoped to reopen the suite later in the week.
