The Gorham Town Council considered last night whether to discontinue the solid waste drop-off at the town’s transfer station off Huston Road.
Action on the question came after the American Journal deadline Tuesday night.
Town Manager David Cole recommended that the town phase out the service because a Gorham business, Plan-It Recycling & Transfer, accepts refuse items like computers, TVs, refrigerators and metal objects.
The town has been charging residents for the service.
Cole said Plan-It Recycling is located in the Gorham Industrial Park near the Westbrook line. “We shouldn’t be in business when there’s a business capable of doing it,” Cole said.
Cole said that the drop-off program at the town’s transfer station has been by appointment except for four hours on the first Saturday of each month. He said a public works department employee often had to leave another assignment to monitor a drop off.
In other business, the Town Council was to receive a report of a study about strategic planning for the fire and rescue departments. Cole said Policy 1 Research and the Maine Fire Training and Education department at Southern Maine Community College did the study.
He said Jim Damicis of Policy 1 was to make a brief presentation. Damicis worked on the study with Bruce Hensler of Maine Fire Training and Education.
The council also held a public hearing to hear comment and considered action to rezone the Merriman property on Main Street from roadside commercial to the industrial district.
Nappi Distributors of Portland has asked that the 22-acre parcel be rezoned. Nappi wants to build a $13 million warehouse and corporate headquarters at the site.
