The annual Winter BOMB! extreme biking competition will be held on Jan. 28 at the Shawnee Peak ski resort in Bridgton and will feature contests in downhill, slopestyle and big air.
All on bikes. All on the snow.
This year’s Winter BOMB! is the fifth for the annual contest, which was started by John Kibbler of Sebago Outfitters in North Windham. The first two took place at the Lost Valley Ski Area in Auburn, the last two at Shawnee Peak.
The event is open to those of any skill level who wants to participate. The downhill, slopestyle course and big air jump will all feature three paths that contestants can choose from, each varying in “gnarliness” to suit their skill levels.
The riders will compete against other riders of similar level in classes from beginner to expert. The big air and slopestyle winners will be decided by judges based on amplitude of jumps, technical prowess and style.
Last year, the event drew 50 or so onlookers in addition to around 150 participants, who joined the crowd as they were eliminated.
The event will run from about 9 a.m. until the late afternoon and will be followed by a performance at Shawnee Peak’s Blizzards Pub by Portland-based classic rock cover band Under the Covers, who will play from 4:30 to 7:30.
