Field Hockey:

Coach: Cory Merrill

Record: 5-10

Seniors: Maegan Shreves, Krissy Varney, Danielle Smith, Amy Harmon, Sam Ennis, Caitlin Bott, Kayla Sanville, Danielle Wong, Laura Gildart, Sam Murchie, Aimee Fisher and Tabitha Booth.

The Windham girls only got better as the fall went along, saving their best field hockey for the end of the season.

Among the highlights was a 3-0 win at Marshwood late in the fall and a 3-0 win at home over Scarborough to close the season.

Their best game, however, might have been their first-round playoff game at Noble, which they lost 2-1, but not before sending the game into overtime and corners.

“The girls really found their scoring niche in the later part of the season,” said Coach Merrill. “That’s what they had been missing. They worked hard. It’s been a good season.”

Laura Gildart (offensive) and Kayla Sanville (defensive) earned the team’s MVP awards this season while Sam Ennis was presented the Coach’s Award.

Football

Coach: Matt Perkins

Record: 2-6

Seniors: Jordan Scanlon, Jesse Woodman, Sean Lavery, Greg Hoar, Seth Payson, Tony Kostopoulos, Justin Mohn, Beau Dahms, Jon Desmond, Glenn Connell, Matt Sherburne and Kyle Macqueston.

Season: After making significant progress his first three seasons building a strong program, coach Matt Perkins’ Eagles found the going tougher their first season in the tough Western Class A division.

The team was able to flex its muscle in a 40-0 rout of South Portland early in the year and the Eagles ended their season on a winning note with a 7-6 victory over Westbrook.

Matthew Sherburne was named the team’s MVP this season and Travis Cook was presented an award for Most Improved Player. Sean Lavery and Jordan Scanlon won the Coach’s Award.

Girls Soccer

Coach: Wally LeBlanc

Record: 9-5-1

Seniors: Darcy Webster, Sharma Wing, Kelsey Stewart, Joanna Clark

Season: First-year coach Wally LeBlanc had his girls playing well out of the gate this fall and the team challenged the best in Western Maine, ending the season with nine wins. The Eagles started the season with four consecutive wins, and won five of their first six, the lone loss in that stretch coming to eventual state champion Gorham.

Windham’s season finally ended with a narrow 2-1 loss against Cheverus, despite a late comeback effort. Sharma Wing ended a prolific career with a goal in the final minutes (on a pass from fellow senior Darcy Webster) to keep the Eagle’s post-season hopes alive, but time ran out on them. Those seniors, along with goal keeper Joanna Clark and forward Kelsey Stewart gave the team strong upperclassman leadership to a team that also included five talented freshmen.

Boys Soccer:

Coach: Jim O’Connor

Record: 2-7-5

Seniors: Derek Hanrahan, Zach Janosik, Dylan Saucier, Andrew Olsen, Ben Toppi, Jeremy Eagan, Garrett McDonnell, Seth Marston, Ben Hodge, Casey Wassick.

Season: After losing a lot to graduation from last year’s team, the Windham boys had trouble nailing down wins this season. The team won their opener (4-1 over Sanford) then topped Noble, but had trouble scoring over the rest of the season.

Down the stretch, Windham played everybody close, tying Thornton Academy 3-3 before losing one-goal games to Deering and South Portland to close out the regular season. Goal keeper Zach Cantor continued to play strong late in the season for Windham.

The boys made the Western Maine playoffs, but fell 2-1 to Cheverus in the preliminary round, despite Garrett McDonnell’s goal from Dylan O’Connor giving the Eagles an early lead.

McDonnell was named the team’s Most Improved Player, Zach Janosik and Hanrahan were presented with Coach’s Awards and Benjamin Toppi was named the team’s MVP.

Cross Country:

Coach: Jeff Riddle

Record: Boys 0-6; Girls 0-4-2

Matt Larrivee, the team’s Most Improved runner, continued to impress, finishing 27th in a tough six-team meet at Bonny Eagle late in the regular season. And he finished 75th in the Western Maine Regional meet (20:35). Austin Loukas (89th in regionals) and Dan Jameson (90th), Kevin Millett (99th) and Joe Ferrian (101st) also ran well in the post-season.

For the girls, the nicest surprise was the emergence of Kayla Phinney, just a freshman, but a fast one.

Phinney, the team’s MVP, took 13th at the Western Class A Regionals, then followed that up with a sixth place finish at the state meet.

Megan Etter (76th overall), Jordan Pennels, Alexandra Gordan and Kristi Jacques also ran well in the regional meet.

Other cross country awards went to Alexandra Gordan, Nathaniel Butler and Daniel Jameson (all with Coach’s Awards).

Golf:

Coach: Roger Young

Record: 0-10

Seniors: Julia Farides

Season: Sam LeBlanc, a sophomore and the team’s number one, selected as team MVP and earned his way to the second team of the SMAA All Stars, playing his best match of the year in a losing effort against a tough Thornton opponent.

“The kids tried all season,” said Coach Young, “And individually they improved.”

That gives hope to next year’s season, when all but one player – senior Julia Farides – returns.

Farides, who was an SMAA All-Academic selection, will be missed.

Other post-season awards went to freshman Ryan McCarthy (Most Improved) and to junior Justin Davis, who earned the Coach’s Award “for his good attitude and willingness to take risks,” said Young.
