Field Hockey

Coach: Dagny Leland

Record: 13-3-1

Seniors: Ashley Emery, Arianne Smart, Tanya Ross, Lindsay Ward.

York finally beat out the Lakers for a spot in the Class B state championship game (with a 3-1 win in the Western Main finals), but not before Coach Dagny Leland’s team put up another impressive season, posting the best record in Western Maine Class B.

Among the rewarding wins for the team this year was a 2-1 victory over Greely in the Western Maine semifinals, and a 2-1 win over Leavitt in the quarterfinal round. The Lakers also had a nice 1-0 shutout over Greely near the end of the regular season, a highlight win that sent the team to the Western Maine finals.

Kayla Nowell and Kelsey Powers were first team All Conference selections and Lindsay Ward made second team All Conference.

“It was a truly successful year for everyone on our team, going as far as we did,” said Coach Leland. “A successful team beats with one heart.

“And we couldn’t have done it without the support of other teammates, parents and school staff,” she said. “Everybody was behind us encouraging us to keep going and we did. I am thrilled and honored to be a part of this team.”

Football

Coach: Chuck Hamaty

Record: 2-7

Seniors: Brandon Allen, Ryan Anderson, Peter Bretton, Nick D’Ascanio, Brian Harris, Bryant Libby, Tyler Merritt, Nick Mullins, Kyle Proctor, Andrew Quasnitschka, Steven Robinson and Justin Smith.

Coach Hamaty points to an impressive 28-18 comeback win at Falmouth on opening day as one of the team’s highlights this fall.

But the Lakers also took a 42-26 win at Gray- New Gloucester midway through the season.

“Hopefully the members of our team will take the experiences, memories and lessons learned from this year with them as they continue to grow and develop,” said Hamaty.

Garnering some individual honors were Brandon Allen and Ryan Anderson, both earning All-Conference honors after the season.

Boys Soccer

Coach: Pete Webb

Record: 5-9-2

Seniors: Seth Newton, Brian Poulin, Evan Thurlow, Brandon Webb.

The Lakers made the playoffs for the first time this season, earning their way in as the number nine seed and they took advantage of the opportunity. The Lakers beat eighth-seed Mountain Valley 3-0 before finally falling to number one Falmouth 3-0 in the quarterfinal round of the post season.

“We have a great group of young men who work extremely hard and love the game,” said Coach Webb. “And despite injuries and losing starters midway through the season, we won some key games to put us into the playoff picture.”

Midfielder Brandon Webb and forward/mid Todd Shigo earned All-Conference selections and teammed with forward Jason Ward-Burton and back Jordan Nichols to give the team a good collection of skilled players.

Girls Soccer

Coach: Lynne Harrison

Record: 9-6

Seniors: Caitlyn Coady, Shannon Morton, Kate Callahan, Sam Allen, Brianna Ebling.

A brilliant start saw the Lakers girls win their first five games (over Fryeburg Academy, Gray New-Gloucester, Wells, Cape Elizabeth and Freeport) before finally losing at York, 2-0. The girls had more trouble winning down the stretch, but made the post-season playoffs, where they fell to Maranacook.

“Speed and quickness were important to our attack,” said Coach Lynne Harrison, who’s team challenged the best this year, and she added that she relied “on sophomores and juniors to fill key spots.”

Caitlyn Coady, Shannon Morton and Sam Allen served as captains and gave the team solid leadership and Allen joined junior prolific scorer Z.Z. Leighton and senior goal keeper Brianna Ebling on the All-Conference team this fall.

Golf

Coach: Art Kilborn

Record: 5-4-1

Seniors: Deven McAfee, Paul Sanford, Spencer Morton, Ed Hamaty, Nick Cudlitz

Qualifying for the states at the Natanis Golf Club was a highlight for this year’s Lakers golf team, said coach Art Kilborn.

“Although we struggled to get our playing numbers up (down six players from last year’s team), things look promising with the talent that we may have coming back,” said Kilborn. “This year’s team proved to be a very dedicated group and worked hard on improving their skills.”

Holden, a WMC All-Star, placed sixth overall in Class A state competition and sixth in the Western Maine Qualifier to pace the team, which finished ninth in Class A this season.

Cross Country

Coach: Dan Dors

Record: Boys were 2-3 and fifth in Class B at the state meet; the girls were 0-5.

Seniors: Miles Bartlett, Kevin Floster.

Bartlett and Floster led the way for an outstanding boys season and freshman Tabitha Titzer came on strong to highlight the girls performance this fall.

Bartlett proved to be the class of the league, outpacing, not only every runner in Class B at the state championships at Leavitt High School, but every other runner in any class on that day.

Bartlett went on to place 13th in the New England Regionals.

Floster, meanwhile, followed up Bartlett’s outstanding accomplishment with a 10th place finish at the state meet.

Titzer saved maybe her best race for the state meet, finishing sixth.

“I think this was one of the better years the Lakers have had,” Dors said. “I knew how the boys would be this year, but the girls were an unknown factor. That’s been a nice surprise.”

Floster, Bartlett and Tabitha Titzer earned MVP Awards while Jessica Titzer and Keegan Eldridge were named Most Improved.
