A Westbrook man was taken into custody early Friday morning after a 90-minute standoff with police at a home on Winslow Street.
Police Chief Paul McCarthy said Gary Williamson, 45, of Winslow Street was taken into custody after he left his Winslow Street home at approximately 2:30 a.m. Friday. McCarthy said police are looking into charging Williamson with creating a police standoff.
McCarthy said members of his family, concerned for his safety, describing Williamson as despondent, called police to the residence. Family members told police Williamson had threatened suicide in the past, and McCarthy said there was some concern that he had attempted to overdose on drugs. Additionally, Williamson’s wife told police she had seen him with a pistol she didn’t know he had.
Police arrived at Williamson’s home at about 1 a.m., and he refused to come out, creating the standoff. Eight officers waited outside the house until Officer Tom Roche was able to talk Williamson into coming outside peacefully. Once he left the house, he was taken into custody and transported to Maine Medical Center for observation, McCarthy said. No one was injured in the incident, and police were unable to find a weapon after searching Williamson and his home.
The incident remains under investigation by the Westbrook police.
