Last week, parents and students at Saccarappa and Canal schools took advantage of a break in the rainy weather to take part in Walk Your Kid to School Day.
Westbrook School Health Coordinator Sandy Hale said she was pleased with the number of kids who walked to school. She said about 110 kids at Canal walked to school and 43 students from Saccarappa took part in the program.
Students walked to school with their parents, or they came to school as part of a walking school bus, where volunteers holding signs picked up kids along a predetermined route and escorted them safely to school. Once they arrived at school, every kid who walked along with any parents who walked to school with their kids were invited to have breakfast in the school cafeteria.
“It was a wonderful ending to the walk,” Hale said.
Saccarappa School Principal Kate Hersom said she was a big supporter of the program and she wanted to see it grow. “I would really love to see it gain momentum for next year so we can get more parents and students walking,” she said.
This is the third time the Westbrook elementary schools have held a Walk Your Kid to School day. “I just wish we did it more often,” said Hale. She said she is looking to have a similar event in the spring.
Hale said walking to school as long as the weather cooperates is an easy way for parents and kids to get some exercise together. She said she would encourage parents, if they have the time, to try and walk their kids to school as often as they can.
“It’s a healthy and good thing to do,” she said.
