The Westbrook police are investigating a possible link between last week’s rash of tire slashings in Portland and South Portland and similar vandalism in Westbrook last month.

Police Chief Paul McCarthy said police are looking to see if there are any connections between the incidents, but so far haven’t found any.

Last week, Portland police received reports of more than 40 cars with tires slashed at various locations in the city. Police in South Portland also received reports of at least 15 tire slashings at around the same time. Last month, vandals struck in Westbrook with many residents coming out to their cars to find all four of their tires slashed.

Tires were slashed at parking lots along Main Street, with at least eight residents who parked their cars overnight in a Mechanic Street parking lot having to fix all four of their tires. In all, about 15 cars had their tires slashed in the Westbrook spree last month.

While police have not been able to find a connection between the Portland, South Portland and Westbrook incidents, McCarthy said the fact that so many tires have been slashed in the three bordering cities have led police to look for a connection. “The fact that they have happened in the volume like they did in Westbrook have led us to consider whether they are related,” he said.

McCarthy said there has not been any more cases of mass tire slashings in Westbrook since last month. He said there have been a few cases, the last two occurring this weekend, but for the most part things have slowed down. “It’s significantly better than it was a couple of weeks ago,” he said.

Police are still looking into the incidents. Anyone with any information should call the police at 854-0644.
